Introduction to Algebraic Geometry

چکیده

Algebraic geometry is a mixture of the ideas of two Mediterranean cultures. It is the superposition of the Arab science of the lightening calculation of the solutions of equations over the Greek art of position and shape. This tapestry was originally woven on European soil and is still being refined under the influence of international fashion. Algebraic geometry studies the delicate balance between the geometrically plausible and the algebraic possible. Whenever one side of this mathematical teeter-totter outweighs the other, one immediately loses interest and runs off in search of a more exciting amusement. George R. Kempf 1944 2002

SMSTC (2012/13) Geometry and Topology LECTURE NOTES 5: Surfaces in Algebraic Geometry

January 23, 2013 Frances Kirwan’s book Complex algebraic curves is an excellent introduction to complex algebraic curves (see [5]). Whenever possible I have included a page reference to the book, in the form [5]. Another beautiful book on this subject is Rick Miranda’s book Algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces (see [6]). To get a feeling what is higher-dimensional complex algebraic geometry, s...

An Introduction to Algebraic Geometry codes

We present an introduction to the theory of algebraic geometry codes. Starting from evaluation codes and codes from order and weight functions, special attention is given to one-point codes and, in particular, to the family of Castle codes.

Naive Introduction to Algebraic Geometry: the Geometry of Rings

I. BASIC TOOL: RATIONAL PARAMETRIZATION Algebraic geometry is a generalization of analytic geometry the familiar study of lines, planes, circles, parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas, and their 3 dimensional versions: spheres, cones, hyperboloids, ellipsoids, and hyperbolic surfaces. The essential common property these all have is that they are defined by polynomials. This is the defining characteri...

An Introduction to Affine Schemes

This paper gives a basic introduction to modern algebraic geometry. The goal of this paper is to present the basic concepts of algebraic geometry, in particular affine schemes and sheaf theory, in such a way that they are more accessible to a student with a background in commutative algebra and basic algebraic curves or classical algebraic geometry. This paper is based on introductions to the s...

The Geometry of Formal Varieties in Algebraic Topology I

Algebraic topology is full of computations with rings, and where we find rings we should seek geometry through methods of algebraic geometry. The geometry of formal varieties turn out to organize many interesting computations in topology, and certain formal varieties called commutative, one-dimensional formal groups give the best global picture of stable homotopy theory currently available. I w...

What is Numerical Algebraic Geometry?

The foundation of algebraic geometry is the solving of systems of polynomial equations. When the equations to be considered are defined over a subfield of the complex numbers, numerical methods can be used to perform algebraic geometric computations forming the area of numerical algebraic geometry. This article provides a short introduction to numerical algebraic geometry with the subsequent ar...
